Machu Picchu - "old
peak" and Terraced Ruins
Machu Picchu
itself is not a level plateau, the ruins are built on terraces.
Machu Picchu literally means "old peak".
So, the mountain in the background (Machu Picchu) actually gave
the whole site its name.
Where there`s an "old peak" there has to be a new one as
well and in Machu Picchu, it can be found on the other side of the
compound. But if you followed the arrows above you'll already have
seen Huayna Picchu...
The small house in the upper left is the hut of the caretaker of the
funerary rock, the traditional vantage
point for the obligatory picture of Machu Picchu from above.
